Great post on Sicko at The Back Row Manifesto

Why do I think this post by Tom Hall re: Michael Moore's doc Sicko is great? Because it made me want to watch the movie (yeah, I know its an important movie about an important issue, but I was going to watch Transformers for the second time at my next movie outing, change of plans now). Here is a bit from the post at The Back Row Manifesto : "Any American who watches a woman who has lost her home to health care related debt break down in tears of disbelief as she receives free health care from what is essentially a Third World hospital will feel deeply ashamed. How can it be that a nation like Cuba, relatively poor, can provide free health care to its people while we, the richest nation in the world, drive our people into debt and despair for the sake of medical profiteering? Sicko is built on moments like this, and succeeds because it recognizes the fundamental humanity of its subjects." Read the rest here . Thanks AJ Schnack for the link. - Sujewa

People are stepping up; as of now a big thanks goes out to: Osiris Books They sell used books & furniture & art. Check out their site & visit their charming store when you are in the area. All Books Considered The day job - another excellent Kensington used bookstore. ABC has been supportive of my film work for years. Did interview with Ali Naderzad, Gazette :: Ms. Amanda is making oatmeal cookies for opening night

Preparations & publicity work for the Date Number One 7/12 - 18 run in Kensington, MD continued today. Did an interview for the Gazette newspapers, and also one for Ali Naderzad - he's got a blog & he is the film editor for Anthem Magazine . Time to go to sleep, got a full day of dealing with sponsors, day job work, buying an ad, and work on the movie tomorrow. Busy (& kinda nervous), but lovin' it - getting the movie out DIY style baby! A one week run at a large local venue w/ all major area newspapers giving some ink to the event - that's pretty sweet. Girlfriend Amanda said today that she will bake 100 or so oatmeal cookies to sell at the opening night. Those cookies are home-made delicious. Related - audience members will be able to bring their own food & snacks to the movie. Will post up the interview links when they appear next week. - Sujewa

There's a nice small towney/old timey feel to this: "Kensington filmmaker screens in Town Hall" :: Happy July 4th!

The Armory Building in Kensington houses the town government & other facilities & the performance space there (often used for plays) is also used for elections & town meetings, so the venue is also known as the Town Hall. There's a nice small town feel to this brief mention of the Date Number One 7/12 -18 run in today's (July 4) Kensington Gazette (there should be a larger article about the event in next week's paper), it's like something out of that TV show Ed or Northern Exposure or something :) , very cool : " Kensington filmmaker screens in Town Hall Kensington filmmaker Sujewa Ekanayake will hit the lights in town hall and screen his film ‘‘Date Number One” for a week. He will be on hand at 7:30 p.m. each night from July 12-18 at 3710 Mitchell St., screening the comedy about five first dates. The movie costs $7 per person. Ekanayake said the movie is split up into five first dates including a ninja’s blind date, one with a woman constantly

Jennifer Fox interview at Still in Motion blog

Fox's Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman (which I probably won't get to see fully - all 6 hours - until late July) opens at NYC's Film Forum today! Go check it out & celebrate yer independence. Read the Still in Motion interview with Fox here . I recently watched the second hour of Flying, liked it a lot - it is lighter than the first hour, in tone, and the world-travelin' by the lead character (Fox herself) is fun to watch. Will have a full review on this blog in late July. - Sujewa

Photographers fighting back in Silver Spring

Check out this DCist article about the conflict between photographers vs. DC area security people & a developer, and what's being done about it. Here's a little bit from the article: " The lease signed by the county to the developers contains an easement "for public access," though it allows the private company to "enforce reasonable rules and regulations." Both of these statements seem pretty obvious: photography is allowed on Ellsworth Drive. Non-commercial photography of the area in downtown Silver Spring is not only reasonable, but it constitutes part of "public access," just like walking down Constitution Avenue. The Peterson Company has issued a laughable statement in reaction to the recent publicity over this issue, and has somehow deemed itself the authority to "give" these rights to photographers, stating in a press release, "We permit all [photography, videography and other filming at our Center]." The dev
