Discussing the quality of Black film festivals at The Obenson Report

I have to take a tiny break from my 2 Do list to pass along this link - a discussion about Black film festivals at The Obenson Report . From the post : "And instead of naming those that I grew to find unworthy of my time and money, I'll instead give praise to those that I have attended at least once, that have given me reasons to want to continue going back: 1. The Harlem Film Festival (NYC), which used to be curated by Michelle Materre; I'm not sure if she still is. But when she did, those years that I attended were memorable and worthwhile. Not one of the biggest of the bunch; but you're guaranteed a professional, intimate, thoughtful experience. 2. The African Diaspora Film Festival (it's a traveling festival). Run by husband and wife team, Diarah N’Daw-Spech and her husband Reinaldo Barroso-Spech. You're certain to find an eclectic group of films at this festival, covering the entire African Diaspora, hence it's title. They've been doing it

Independent Exposure '08 winner Rise

About Rise : "Each film plays as a chapter recounting the creation of humankind in a fantastical manner. The first chapter Fallen, depicts an Eve-like character’s introduction to technology and the divine consequences of this meeting. The second chapter, Rise, resumes many years later, long after the female character's first meeting with technology. Here she has transformed from her original Eve-like state of naked innocence into a clothed mysterious being. In place of her original naivety our character now holds a cryptic knowledge of the natural world often feared and marked as witchcraft. As a result of this transformation the two characters of machine and human have switched their roles of protagonist and antagonist. Again their meeting results in a dramatic shift in the environment. The cause and ramifications of this event remains an ambiguous mystery. Is the flood a positive transformation of this world, or a tragic loss of the original environment?" More here

NYC Film Collective's flick Thieves sounds interesting

I'd like to see this movie, being created by the NYC Film Collective . Here's the synopsis: THIEVES "Follow four New Yorkers who have normal day jobs, but unsuspectingly happen to all share a certain hobby - stealing. Adam is a photographer just getting his start who is long time friends with Chet, a lone-gun web designer. Jackie enjoys the attention of men and taking what she can get. Flip is a gentleman who's too smooth for his own good and conversely enjoys the attention of ladies. Through the art of thievery, each of the four's worlds collide." More at the NYC Film Collective's page for the movie . - Sujewa

NYC Film Collective site link

So research into & exploration/development of the NYC DIY Filmmakers Co-op idea has begun. I found a site for a group called NYC Film Collective (thanks julio for the link!) - they seem to have the kind of attitude & spirit & approach that would make it possible for filmmakers to make & distribute movies outside of the restrictive & mysteriously selective festwood (film festivals), indiewood (a smaller version of Hollywood), and Hollywood (multi-million dollar productions using guild talent) structures (note: festivals are far more friendly to DIY filmmakers than Indiewood or Hollywood, but all 3 avenues are inaccessible to most indie filmmakers). From the intro to the NYC Film Collective site: "A Painter needs only a paintbrush and a canvas; a musician needs only two turntables and a microphone! Yet to be a filmmaker it seems thousands of dollars are needed to make something that nobody is going to see anyway or to be an actor you must wait for someone

Should we create a new D.I.Y. filmmakers co-op in NYC?

I know of several (at least 4 off the top of my head, myself included) filmmakers who live in NYC, have day jobs, and are planning on or are actively working on shooting & or releasing new features this year. Perhaps people in this situation - filmmakers who are working outside of Hollywood methods (financing from studios, budgets in the millions, using guild labor, etc.) or indiewood methods (smaller version of Hollywood methods) should think about forming an association - a coorperative or a co-op - where labor & resources (including money) can be exchanged in order for each member of the co-op to be able to make & distribute his/her features. This is how this NYC DIY filmmaker co-op could work: - Let's say there are four members in the co-op - all writer/videographer/director/editiors who also blog and have some experience with self-distribution and are capable of filling in for any production or distribution role on an ultra-low budget DV feature. - Let's say I
