New classification for cameras - Video 16 MM - Canon XA50, XA70, Sony NX80, Z90

To create a video 16 MM look the following cameras with a 15.9 MM diagonal sensor (or 1" sensor) can be used: Canon XA50 Canon XA70 Sony NX80 Sony Z90 If the video was shot and released at 4K, using one of those 4 cameras, with a color grade that's well done and resembles or exceeds the visual qualities of 16 MM film, with the video output done at highest possible tech levels - then the video can be classified as being video 16 MM or the video equivalent of something filmed on 16 MM film. Further, to be considered video 16 MM the cameras need to have fixed lenses, XLR handles, and need to cost less than $3000 new in 2024 money (or similar in later years). The goal is to create an accessible and high quality format that can be used for indie fiction features. A format through an easy-to-use camera that can capture great visuals and audio. This format and classification of cameras are to be promoted as a new global standard for indie fiction filmmaking. Sample test video:

4 test videos Canon Vixia HF G70 - possible new camcorder for indie fiction feature filmmakers

  * * *

New project - shooting a lot on a Canon G70 camcorder for an entire year, making a lot of movies - has begun

 In previous years I've shot a fiction feature every 1 to 3 or 4 years.  I finished 1 feature in 2022, and then another 1 in 2023.  But perhaps movies can be made faster with an approach that's similar to blogging and vlogging. Daily work, using easy-to-use gear.  So we begin a new filmmaking experiment - shooting and releasing a lot of indie fiction features within 1 year, and using 1 camcorder. The camcorder that has been selected for this project is the Canon Vixia HF G70. It's a small sensor camcorder, but with very recent tech. The camcorder came out in fall/late 2022.  Good focus and color tech.  People mostly use that camcorder and similar ones for news, events, sports type work. But, I believe it can be used very well for fiction feature filmmaking. Here is video from day 1 - a quick cinematic look test to see if the colors will work (they will) and if other aspects of the camera will work (they will) for my filmmaking projects in 2024 - shot on a very cold day in N

The New Indie Film Canon - 50 Films By 10 Filmmakers

By Sujewa Ekanayake I was having an argument with the guy behind the counter at one of my local delis about wether it was possible and or useful to create a new indie film canon. Creating a list of films that are good examples of the unique art form that indie/non-Hollywood film has become over the past 30 (Dogme 95 starting around 1995) to 70 (Breathless screening at Cannes in 1960) or so years. The guy behind the counter at the deli did not think it was a good idea, but he did offer me free coffee in exchange for placing some of his favorite sci-fi horror movies on the list - if I made the list. Many of those movies involve zombie cheerleaders from outer space. I decided to pay for the coffee. The films on this list are real indie/independent, largely non-Hollywood films. Made and often distributed without the financial backing or creative control of established, large, mainstream film studios or production companies and or distribution companies in the United States.
