DocuClub "In-the-Works" at SilverDocs - CALL FOR ENTRIES

DOCUCLUB “IN-THE-WORKS” AT SILVERDOCS - CALL FOR ENTRIES DocuClub is pleased to announce its participation in the 2008 SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival with an “In-the-Works” program. The deadline for submissions is APRIL 18, 2008. SILVERDOCS takes place June 16-23, just outside Washington DC. For more information about the Festival, go to: http://www.silverdocs.com/ DocuClub is currently accepting submissions for an “In-the-Works” program at SILVERDOCS. The “In-the-Works” program offers filmmakers a safe environment to screen a rough-cut of their documentaries before an audience of their peers and lovers of the form. The audience is encouraged to give constructive feedback about the structure, content, characters and clarity of the film in a post-screening discussion facilitated by an experienced filmmaker. Past films that have screened “In-the-Works” include BORN INTO BROTHELS, METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER, and THE BOYS OF BARAKA, which won an Audience Award

No small movies, only small screens

Says Anthony Kaufman , check it out, a good read . Art, indie/real indie, foreign movies getting more theater screens would certainly be a good thing; even watching a relatively quiet & low-key indie such as Medicine for Melancholy would be far more enjoyable on a big movie theater screen than on my TV - in my opinion. - Sujewa

Tribes under the cover of a world religion vs. states with central authority and individual responsibility & rights?

Even though I am not a regular reader of the conservative magazine The Weekly Standard , this long article - " I and My Brother Against My Cousin ", about the book Culture and Conflict in the Middle East by Philip Carl Salzman, was interesting. It offers a view point on a few things related to the War on Terror & the ongoing conflict between Islam and the west. Certainly the Standard article is not the final word on this matter, much more research & thought is necessary - but in my rough ideas re: what I think my question is contains the following - in this world we have several very effective nations with centralized governments, law & order nation wide, & individual rights. We also have many nations with a government in name, but without law & order nationwide or prosperity or access to prosperity for many individuals and without individual rights (rights may exist on paper, but not in practice) or means with which to defend such (fair courts, etc

Web site for "Prabhakaran", Sri Lankan film about the war

The new film Prabhakaran has been getting a lot of press attention in Sri Lanka & India long before its release due to its subject matter & perceived approach by the director. The director Thushara Peries recently survived being attacked by a mob in India. The Sri Lankan government screened the film last month and approved its release. This week a Sri Lankan Tamil politician asked Indian Tamil politicians not to oppose the release of the movie (the release prints are at the moment being held at a lab in India). The film is named after the leader of the Tamil terrorist group LTTE, and the director of the film is described as a moderate, non-communal Sinhala (the war in Sri Lanka, at this point, is between the LTTE - a militant separatist group from the Tamil minority - and the Sri Lankan government - an organization that represents a multi-ethnic but mostly Sinhala population). Here is a description of the film, using some of director Peries's own words, from a Sunday Time
