Customer, can you hear me? - Momma's Man is funny (& available for streaming on Netflix)

I avoided watching Momma's Man when it first came around because a lot of critics liked it a lot & also mostly because they made it sound like it was depressing, but, after barely making it through an episode of Californication (very painful to watch, and not in any kind of a good way, except maybe for the nudity) tonight and having realized that I've seen all the Office & 30 Rock episodes available on Netflix I decided to check out Momma's Man. I am about 30 mins. into it (had to take a break to help a neighbor), so far the movie is really funny - in a low key way - about a dude hiding out from his life in California at his parent's apt in NYC.

In a way there is a relationship between Californication & Momma's Man. Both shows are somewhat about artists. In Californication the lead character is a writer, but the show is really like some bad fantasy for dudes who are getting old - full of cliches. Momma's Man features real life artists playing a version of themselves (main character dude's parents), also it is about a kind of escapism, but a lot easier to enjoy than Californication.

(i am, however, a big fan of x-files, so, david d., when we run into each other, don't complain about this post, californication just needs better writing - or maybe not, maybe it's customers are very happy with that product).

Anyway, check out Momma's Man (for those of you with Netflix, it's available for streaming). It's not depressing, & is actually funny - even though critic types are into it it's just a regular movie. Here's a trailer:

Also, since I am talking a lot about Californication in this post, here's a little of that, for compare & contrast purposes (& yes, even though i complain about it, i'll probably watch another episode at some point):

Introduce us to your favorite painters & paintings.

There's a PBS (i think) show on French painters right now. Other, older, forms of art, & the people who made them, can be inspirational & useful for filmmakers I think. I've learned a lot from indie rock (some aesthetic stuff, lots of bidness stuff), maybe I can learn stuff from painting too. So in July & August I am going to blog about painters & I would like you to comment & tell us about your favorite painters & other interesting stuff about painting. Painting is thousands of years old. Filmmaking is a little over 100 years old. US Indie filmmaking as we know it is perhaps a little over 50 years old (w/ the beginning somewhere around the time when the Cassavetes generation got its inspiration/started work). Us new indie filmmakers - the digital/web/DIY generation, can probably learn a lot by taking a look at/getting to know, painting & other older art forms. I'll start w/ Edward Hopper . Here's page w/ a lot of info on him. His most famou...
