People sometimes feel more comfortable approaching people/experts who look like them, so, if the indie film biz/scene wants to get more diversity going in its ranks, adding some minority/"non-white" experts to the panel discussions would probably be a useful thing - as far as increasing participation by minority artists in indie film.
But, on the other hand, most social divisions are just a thin & temporary veil/layer of how society is set up - a small part of the machine that's set up in a certain way to attempt to create certain predictable results - & ultimately does not have to be a strong barrier against personal development, so, feel free to approach any expert & ask them for advice & or talk to them even if they do not look like you.
